Dickies for Days

During the winter season, we try all that we can to combat the cold. Although many people enjoy long scarves that wrap around their neck, I have come to love and enjoy a dickie.

What is a dickie?

Traditionally it is known as a piece of clothing for men, a dickey is a type of shirtfront that is worn with black tie and with white tie evening clothes. The dickey is usually attached to the shirt collar and then tucked into the waistcoat or cummerbund.

However, it is currently a piece of clothing, often with a turtle or mock neck piece, that allows for more modesty beneath low fitting tops. Otherwise, it is just a turtle neck/shawl sweater weight knit piece to keep you warm during the winter.

Well, since making my dickie, I have made 3 more and I’m in the process of making an additional one for myself!

This pattern that I have been following I got on Etsy on the page Yarnique. The pattern is called the Cozy Knit Dickey. This pattern is such a great pattern. It is easy and beginner friendly for those who are just getting into the hobby.

The second dickie pattern that I’ve been using is from Knitatude, a local Albertan woman who creates beginner-friendly patterns that look incredible! This Dickie is called the Cozy Celtic Kerchief!

I do have to mention that I did slightly mess up on the pattern and misread the first row for the Cozy Celtic Kerchief. But, it doesn’t look dramatically wrong.

I still really like it, even with the flaw. However, I am in the process of making a new celtic dickie, and it will be made correctly!

I cannot wait to have my own celtic dickie though! I gave the one pictured here to my mother.

While I made a Yarnique dickie for my father. You can view his dickie in the photo pictured to the left. He had initially requested a mustard colored dickie, but eventually opted for a red and black one to go with his buffalo plaid jacket.

This was actually my first ever project where I used black yarn. Before that, every time I tried to use black yarn I’d make a mistake and I would frog the entire project!

Well, I am super happy to see that I can in fact knit with black yarn now without frogging anything. I look forward to making new projects with the leftover chunky yarn that I got from Patons.

In case you are interested in all the yarn I used for the above projects, here’s the list:

Brown Dickie:
DROPS Andes, color: Almond (I think- can’t recall the color name)
DROPS Andes, color: Beige

Grey Dickie:
Patons Highland Bulky, color: Oxford Grey
Patons Inspired, color: Silver Grey

Just a note about the grey one. I ran out of the super bulky highland yarn and couldn’t get it as the store I went to ran out. So, when I got the silver grey yarn from patons Inspired line, I doubled up with two strands of yarn.

Black Dickie:
Patons Classic Wool Roving, color: Black
Patons Classic Wool Roving, color: Cherry

You can get all the yarn from the links if you are interested. Furthermore, look into your local stores for your own knitting tools and yarns!

I hope you all continue to keep warm during your winter wherever you are!

Stay cozy!
